“I find the whole phenomenon of his (Duane Cash’s) work fascinating, and I would love to help in keeping his art alive,” says one local collector. “I think we would be losing a great artist, if he returned to working a different job. What if Van Gogh or Monet decided not to paint anymore because of another job? What masterpieces would we have missed out on?”

Duane Cash’s paintings have also been described at “striking” and “incredible” by some art enthusiasts.

Duane Cash, also had an article released recently in the April 2004 issue of “GAMES” Magazine featuring his puzzle inventions in the Duane Cash Cube Collection. Timing did not give any favors for this article because of some website restructuring taking place at the same time on the online Rubikshop.

This week board and members of the Delaware Valley Virtual Assistants Association (DVVAA) attended the International Virtual Assistants Association’s (IVAA) seventh Annual Summit at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, at what proved to be one of its best conferences to date. With 83 professionals in attendance from the US and Canada over the three-day event, DVVAA members made up a whopping 15% of the Summit participants!

DVVAA attendees included all of its board members: Carla Wilson, President; Michelle Murphy, VP of Marketing; Laura Pumo, VP of Communication; Corie Stewart, VP of Membership; and Mary Motz, VP of Technology.

The IVAA Summit for virtual assistants (VAs) included a variety of presentations, breakout sessions with panel and round table discussions, plus numerous informal networking opportunities. Keynote Speaker Dave Lieber (http://www.yankeecowboy.com) delighted the audience with his opening and closing remarks, touching on topics such as the importance of customer service. The cream of British business talent was asked to give a golden nugget of advice they had learnt themselves whilst building up some of the world’s most successful companies:

Self-made millionaire Dame Anita Roddick advises: “Don’t ask your family for money, don’t employ management consultants, don’t deny yourself a wage, don’t deny yourself a life either. Be brave, daring and different”

Barclays’ Marketing Director for Local Business, John Davis, said: “Trading Places is a celebration of unsung heroes who, in spite of great personal challenges, have taken steps to establish a sustainable business and in doing so changed the direction of their lives for the better.

“Barclays Trading Places celebrates the inspiring achievement of these individuals whilst highlighting an increasingly important sector of the business community – the sole traders and small business operations that underpin our economy.”

The judging panel includes Ian King, Business Editor of The Sun, senior representatives from The Prince’s Trust, Business Link and Jobcentre Plus – and they are joined by entrepreneurs Michelle Mone, founder of Ultimo and MJM International, and John Bird, founder of the Big Issue, as special guest judges for the 2006 Awards.

The 10 National Finalists will all attend a glittering gala Awards Dinner at London’s Café Royal on Wednesday September 27, where the top business will be announced.

The ‘Gold’ first prize is £5,000 cash from Barclays, £7,000 worth of directory advertising from Thomson Local Directories plus £2,000 of consultancy from marketing communications agency Foxmurphy. A ‘Silver’ Runner-Up will also receive £3,000 cash from Barclays, plus £3,000 worth of directory advertising from Thomson Local Directories and £1,000 worth of marketing consultancy from Foxmurphy.

Barclays and the Awards’ partners are now inviting people to share their business start-up experiences – good and bad – as an inspiration to others.

Individuals must have been trading for a minimum of three months and no more than three years, with an annual turnover of less than £1million.
